Maturing in a typical Nigerian household, all types of illnesses are malaria, you don’t even have to go to the hospital, no test, just a direct self-diagnosis.
Most times, all we had to do was drink a hot steaming bowl of herbal medicine ’Agbo’, then sit under layers of blankets all covered up waiting for the fever to pass.
Our parents had the almighty remedy to these illnesses but as we mature we started realizing that it’s more than just malaria but a deadly disease, in fact, one of the deadliest illnesses, especially in Africa.
Each year nearly 290 million people are infected with malaria, and more than 400,000 people die of this disease.
Before you start juggling down hot cups of 'Agbo' and concluding that you have malaria, it’s advisable that you get yourself tested or get a malaria home testing kit, or visit the hospital and get proper treatment.
As we continue to spread awareness about this deadly disease, endeavor to keep your environments clean and get mosquito nets, especially if you have kids.
Remember, you can’t treat what you don’t know.
